Having both graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2018, Danish co-founders Christian Hammer Juhl and Jade Chan opened their studio in 2020. The duo are steadfast in their commitment to intention in an age of access to infinite resources. Slow, deliberate craft is vital to honour the living ecosystems that they source their materials from, a defining value of their design. Christian + Jade are the current recipient of the Danish Arts Foundation’s three-year work grant, having undertaken residencies at Danish wood-flooring manufacturer Dinsen and Austrian creative incubator Schloss Hollenegg. They have featured exhibitions in many prestigious cultural institutions, spanning Trienniale Milano, Karimoku Research Centre, Nomad Circle and many others.
Christian + Jade arrive at a meeting point between the brutal and the tender with this exclusive wall lamp created for design/delight Shanghai, fluent in the conceptual language established in their Vessels for Light collection. A single layer of hand-stitched mulberry bark paper is suspended to reveal a soft radiance. The paper has been brushed with wax to allow for layers of subtle transparency, a feature symbolic of the designers’ passion for unearthing the hidden stories in material origins. The Vessels for Light series has been underpinned by playing ‘on the tension between brutal heavy forms and the delicate paper which they are crafted from’, with this custom edition featuring a wooden base from which the paper is lifted.
